Introduction to
Leadership Skills

Introduction to Leadership Skills (ILS) is the first level of leadership training for all youth and is delivered at the unit level. Two versions of the course are available – one for Scout Troops and Varsity Teams, and the other for Venturing Crews.

NYLT

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a dynamic, week-long leadership course for youth. Typically held at the district level, youth register individually for one of the dozens of courses that run throughout the summer. Participants of NYLT courses will be part of a Timberline troop during the NYLT course.

NAYLE

National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is the capstone leadership course available to youth in the BSA. Held traditionally only at Philmont Scout Ranch, this course is week-long leadership adventure for NYLT graduates only, and will be now offered at the BSA Florida Sea Base in Spring 2014!

Varsity Vision

New Varsity Scout coaches and youth leaders are invited to go to this overnight hands-on high adventure experience, one that fulfills basic training requirements for the adult leaders, but allows the advisors and youth to learn together.  Plus you get to learn from actual Varsity leaders and youth team leaders.

Kodiak Challenge

Kodiak Challenge is a high adventure leadership experience held at the unit level. Units combine a ‘trek’ with the teaching of leadership principles. Planning the event is a major part of the experience for the youth involved. Council approval is required to run a Kodiak Challenge course.

Powder Horn

Not leadership training, Powder Horn helps Varsity Teams and Venturing Crews to safely conducted outdoor/high-adventure activities of a fun and challenging nature. The course provides an introduction to the resources needed to successfully lead program of outdoor adventure and is based upon giving participants an exposure to some outdoor/high-adventure activities.

Den Chief Training

While most youth leadership positions are discussed in the ILS training, Den Chiefs require some additional skills in order to effective work with Cubs. This course provides the information and skills required for youth in this specific leadership role.
