Sailing Merit Badge Adventure

Ever wonder what it's like to sail the open waters? Here's your chance! During this overnight adventure at Camp Jeremiah Johnson, youth will discover the art of sailing. Imagine camping in a beautiful canyon and waking up to sail the shimmering waters under the morning sun. Bring the whole troop and count it as a monthly campout!


Own the adventure by getting outside and gaining the unique skills of sailing. 


Scouts ages 11-17, Scouting troops, or anyone interested in learning about sailing


  • $15.00 per participant (Scout)

Additional costs:

  • $5.00 - Dinner (Optional)
  • $5.00 - Breakfast (Optional)
  • $10.00 - Vehicle fee (If sailing portion is done at Utah Lake, there will be a fee per vehicle. Car-pooling/walk-ins recommended.)
  • The camp general store will be open for snacks and basic camping supplies.


Part of completing the merit badge will be to swamp the boats.  This will require participants to be swimmers.  BSA swim tests should be done before arriving at camp.


  • A health form for each attendee, including adults
  • Camping/Sleeping Gear - Prepare for cooler weather up in the canyon.
  • Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, bug repellent, and a change of clothes
  • Lunch or snacks
  • Blue cards for Scouts



  • 5:00pm - Check-in, camp set-up, dinner
  • 6:30pm - 9:00pm - Merit badge instruction
  • 10:00pm - Lights out


  • 7:30am - Breakfast/Clean up camp
  • 8:30am - Travel to sailing location: ***Due to weather/lake conditions the location of the sailing portion of the adventure may change last minute.
  • 9:00am - Merit badge instruction - Sailing
  • 3:00pm - Finish up - Head for home


  • The camp general store will be open for snacks and basic camping supplies.
  • We recommend signing up as a troop due to traveling. Leaders are responsible for the transportation of their troops.
  • Scouts will need to travel to the sailing area on Saturday morning. We highly recommend that the entire troop signs up for this adventure. The leaders will need to provide the transportation to the water activity on Saturday.
  • Please be advised that part of the Sailing Merit Badge requires that they participate in capsize drills. The water will be cold!
  • Troops will need to prepare their own dinner and breakfast as part of their camping experience (unless you purchased meals). We recommend to bring a lunch and snacks for Saturday.
