Service Opportunities

For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America's youth. We encourage all Scouting units to celebrate the centennial of Scouting through performing worthwhile service projects. Below are some ideas.

Boy Scouts Can Map the Dead!

Here�s a great new project for your Scout troop�or for your Eagle Scout Service Project: MAP THE DEAD! Mapping a cemetery is a great new way to permanently preserve cemetery records. It helps researchers solve family mysteries and helps communities document their history.

All across the country, there are small cemeteries whose records need to be preserved�and some of these cemeteries are in very strange places! For instance, some towns have cemeteries right in the middle of parking lots. Other small family cemeteries are hidden in the woods and are known only to the people who live close by. Some people even have cemeteries in their own backyards!

How can you help one of these little cemeteries? You can build an online interactive cemetery map at NAMES IN STONE. Creating a cemetery map is easy! First visit the cemetery�draw a map and record the headstone information. Then on your computer, create that same map on the internet. You can build maps for cemeteries of up to 300 graves.
