       Youth Protection Training

The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. In this course, you will learn the BSA YPT Guidelines, signs of abuse, and how to report expected abuse.

REMEMBER - YOU MUST COMPLETE YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING EVERY TWO YEARS TO REMAIN CURRENT, OR YOU WILL NOT BE RE-REGISTERED

There are three types of Youth Protection Training which correspond to the unique requirements of each program.  However, the men should take Y02 only (not Y01) as this training will encompass all scouting (Scouts, Varsity and Venturing)

  • Y01  -  Y01 Youth Protection Training required for Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Varsity Scouting. (Use the same login as "myscouting.org").  A certificate can be printed and submitted with a new adult application or at re-chartering.   An alternate site if BSA site is busy which will take you to the video. Printout the certificate at the end and take to Scout Office to register with your Scout ID.

  • Y02 - Venturing Youth Protection Training required for Venturing Leaders and all Scouting Committee members when one committee serves the Troop, Team, & CrewUse the same login as "myscouting.org".  Click on the Venturing tab, then select Youth Protection Training - Venturing Version. Printout the certificate for a new adult application or at rechartering. An alternate site if BSA site is busy which will take you to the video.  Printout the certificate at the end and take to Scout Office to register with your Scout ID.

  • Y03 - Exploring Youth Protection Training: required for Learning for Life and Exploring and can be taken online. Use the same login as "myscouting.org".

All persons involved in Scouting shall  report to local authorities, any good faith suspicion or belief that any child is or has been physically or sexually abused, physically or emotionally neglected, exposed to any form of sexual exploitation including the possession, manufacture, or distribution of child pornography, online solicitation, enticement, or showing of obscene material.  No person may abdicate this reporting to any other person.
--Guide to Safe Scouting.  "Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse", 2013

Steps to Reporting Child Abuse

    1.  Ensure the safety of the child

             a) Maintain two-deep leadership

             b) Get detailed information from the person reporting the abuse

  2.  Contact your local or state law enforcement agency immediately

  3.  Notify the Scouting Professional if at an event

  4.  Contact the Scout Executive

The "three R's" of Youth Protection convey a simple message to youth members:

  • Recognize situations that place you at risk of being molested, how child molesters operate, and that anyone could be a molester.

  • Resist unwanted and inappropriate attention. Resistance will stop most attempts at molestation.

  • Report attempted or actual molestation to a parent or other trusted adult. This prevents further abuse and helps to protect other children. Let the Scout know he or she will not be blamed for what occurred
