The Rock Canyon District is having a grand opening camporee at — where else? — the Rock Canyon campground. Come compete in our first-ever Scoutcraft Tournament; Win prizes; and demonstrate your wits at our geocaching rally.
Rock Canyon Campground is a little-known jewel for scout camping in the Provo area, with an overlook of Utah Valley. Come and enjoy this fall camping experience with the scouts from our district. You can even check out this sweet location for future campouts with your troop.
Registration All troops must pre-register online. The cost will be $5 for each boy and adult leader. Each troop attending needs to bring with them copies of their registration information and completed tour permit. The tour leader must have a completed “Parental or Guardian Permission and Medical Release” form for each scout and leader. Campsite assignments will be determined by the number of people you have registered for the camporee. Registration will close 23 Sept 2009 at midnight.
How to get there? You can be at the campground within 40 minutes. Follow these driving directions.
Enter Provo Canyon driving northeast on UT 189 for least 1.5 miles. Exit to the right at the Squaw Peak turn-off.
Drive on for at least 3.75 miles. Turn left to Rock Canyon.
You will pass the Hope Campground turn-off, where the pavement ends. You won’t need 4-wheel drive for this dirt road.
Continue driving for at least 4.75 miles. You will see a gated entrance on the right for the Rock Canyon campground.
What should you bring? Be sure to bring the following items:
Drinking water for your troop.
Cooking fuel. Open fires are permitted in established fire pits, but because fire restrictions could change, plan a second way of cooking meals that doesn’t rely on open fires.
Uniformed Scouts and Scouters. Webelo Scouts will be joining us for the Saturday activities and we want to make a good impression.
Food for Friday dinner and Saturday breakfast and lunch.
A handheld GPS receiver for each patrol. Saturday afternoon, participants will be competing in a GPS rally (Garmin Etrex Legend GPS units may be borrowed on site with the deposit of the Scoutmaster’s Wallet).
What is the Scoutcraft Tournament? These are timed and scored events in which patrols will have to apply skills associated with the Tenderfoot through First Class ranks. Scouts -- not adult leaders -- will work as teams to show what they know. Adult leaders are to watch, take photos of their Scouts and cheer them on, but are not to coach or advise during the competitions. Points will be deducted if adults help. Scouts are welcome to bring their handbooks to use as references during the tournament. We encourage the Scoutmasters to prepare their scouts before the Camporee by having their scouts practice or assigning scouts to be specialists in the following skills:
Wildlife identification
The Scout Law
How to set up a tent
Bowline, two half hitches, clove hitch & taut-line hitch
Lashings for an ‘H trestle’
Leave No Trace principles
First aid: using a triangular bandage for sprained ankle, head injury, sling, & cravat bandage for severe bleeding.
Scout Outdoor Essentials
Following lunch on Saturday, Scouts and Webelos will participate in the Geochaching rally. They will use GPS receivers to locate caches throughout the campground and then decipher clues.
Schedule We will follow the schedule below. You will notice that there will not be a Friday night gathering; each troop will hold their own campfire program in their campsite. One of the requirements for the Communication merit badge is for a scout to plan and put on a campfire program. Feel free to invite another troop to your campfire program. Download a planning form.
We will also have an awards ceremony at 2:00. Toops/patrols will have to be present at the ceremony to receive a their awards.
