What is Commissioner College?

Commissioner College is one of the best ways for commissioners to get continuing education in their critical role.  It is modeled after a traditional college, with course requirements leading to Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate "degrees" in Commissioner Science.  The faculty has been selected from among the most capable trainers available.

For all current and future commissioners, including:

  • Unit Commissioners
  • District Commissioners & Assistant District Commissioners
  • Roundtable Commissioners & Staff
  • Other Commissioners and Interested Scouters

Online Format & Approach

  • The Utah National Parks Council provides an online opportunity to complete the Master's of Commissioner Science.
  • Seven Master's level courses will be offered
  • This degree will run from March 26, 2017 - May 14, 2017
  • Each course will last 7 days
  • To get credit for a course, you must complete it and its related activities within the 7 day schedule.
  • If you miss completing a course during the 7-day window, you can still complete future courses.
  • To complete the Master's Degree, you must have received credit for a total of seven courses, either from the online college or from another college (or a combination of both), along with having completed Commissioner Basic Training.
  • Contact Darin Eckton, Dean of the Online Commissioner College, with questions: 801-310-9875

Specific Requirements/Expectations for Online Master's Degree

  • 1 topic/course per week where you will watch a short 10-15 minute video and discussion
  • Set and post at least one commissioner-related goal the first week, report on/discuss progress during weeks 2-6, and post a final report on goal fulfillment during week 7 (these courses are intended to lead you to apply/act and not just talk about the ideal)
  • Attend at least 3 of the 7 live video meetings which last about 30 minutes
  • Each course will be facilitated by a fellow commissioner. However, you will have the opportunity to lead/facilitate a weekly discussion (again, this is an invitation to act/lead rather than just react)
  • TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Computer with microphone and speaker (minimum) and/or video capabilities (preferred) to participate in live video meetings.
