The council now offers a series of NRA-led firearm training courses. Completion of these courses results in your obtaining an NRA Instructor certification that qualifies you to lead firearm activities and to serve as Merit Badge counselors for firearm related merit badges.

Older youth may also take these courses. Participants 16 - 17 years may become Apprentice Instructors, those 18 - 20 years may become Assistant Instructors and Participants 21 yrs or older may become Certified Instructors & Rifle or Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge Counselors.

The Basic Instructor course is required before taking any other courses, unless it has been completed within the last twelve months. The Basic Instructor must be followed by at least one NRA Firearms Instructor Course.

With this guidance and help available, we know we can have fun and safe Scouting activities when using guns and firearms.

NRA Instructors and Range Safety Officers should be experienced shooters, involved in many aspects of target shooting, training, and range supervision. The NRA encourages active shooters to learn more and become responsible for the safety of fellow shooters through these programs,
