2024 Award Recipient Bios

Tonight, we will be recognizing individuals for their service to Scouting, to youth and to the community. Enjoy learning a little bit more about each of this year's award recipients*.

David Augason - 2023 Silver Beaver Recipient

David, and his wife Elaina have been married for 15 years, raising five children. He is the current District Commissioner for the Oquirrh Mountain District and Scoutmaster for his troop.  He finds joy in outdoor activities and is always eager to try new hobbies. Beyond Scouting, David is an active member of his church and is energetically involved in Freemasonry, recently becoming a Master Mason in 2022 and serving as a Lodge Officer for the Corinne, Utah Lodge. In their downtime, David and Elaina enjoy playing board games with family and friends.

 

Julie P. Benson - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Julie is married to Sean Benson, and together they are proud parents of six remarkable children. Julie's involvement in Scouting extends beyond her sons' achievements. Her oldest daughter played a pivotal role as a founding member of an all-female Venturing Crew, with Julie serving as the advisor. She also serves as a member of the staff at Camp Fife.  Outside of Scouting, Julie dedicates her time to serving her community. She has served for 12 years on school community councils, contributing her insights and expertise to improve educational outcomes.

 

Joe Bouley - 2024 Silver Antelope Award Recipient

Joe began his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout in Maine and was a Boy Socut in France. Over the years, he has held numerous roles. Presently, he serves as the Vice Chair of Religious Activities and Relationships for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. Joe's family, including his wife Sara and their children, have all cherished their experiences in Scouting. Joe's professional career as an Air Force fighter pilot and United Airlines pilot spanned nearly 4 decades. Now enjoys retirement to the fullest – serving with a variety of religious and civic organizations.

 

JoAnne R Brown - 2023 Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educatior Award Recipient

JoAnne has taught junior high science for over 25 years. She has always focused on making kids the center of the classroom. Unafraid of controlled chaos, she knows that kids gain knowledge by doing. Her class motto is "Assume Nothing." Making assumptions in science means that you're not prepared for the results. JoAnne exemplifies trustworthy and helpful, not to mention thrifty and brave.  As a result, she has earned the respect of students, parents, school, and community. She is the scoutmaster of Troop 8410, but also plays in a rock band, does every type of craft, and has a karate black belt

 

Toni Bufkin - 2023 Whitney M Young Jr. Award Recipient

In 2019, Toni Bufkin assumed the role of Scoutmaster for Troop 54 in Ogden, bringing her passion for fun to the forefront of meetings and activities. This emphasis on enjoyment forms a fundamental aspect of unique engagement with not just the Scouts, but special needs students, church youth, and other community service endeavors which she is involved in. An educator by profession, Toni finds great fulfillment witnessing the personal growth of individuals under her guidance. Through Scouting, Toni not only witnesses the strength and creativity of youth but also recognizes the growth and resilience of adult volunteers within the program.

 

CaDance Church - Eagle Project of the Year Recipient

The Crossroads of the West Council is pleased to recognize CaDance Church as its selection for the Eagle Scout Project of the Year.  For her Eagle Socut project, CaDance led a dedicated group of 15 scouts and volunteers to turn an empty building lot in Salina, Utah (CaDance’s hometown) into a beautiful courtyard.  The project took 295 hours (about 2 weeks) to complete. At a cost of around $21,000, CaDance led the effort to secure donations and grants to pay for the project.

 

Justin Clawson - 2023 National Outstanding Eagle Scout Recipient

Since 2022, Justin Clawson has served as an Assistant Professor of Extension at Utah State University's Agriculture and Natural Resource Department in Cache County. Previously, he worked for 17 years as a Research Technician in the Plant, Soil, and Climate Department at Utah State University, focusing on breeding wheat and barley for producers in Utah and Idaho. Justin has dedicated himself to Scouting. Currently, he serves as an Assistant Scout Master in Troop 123, which he helped found in 2019.

 

Lafe Conner - Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award Recipient

Teaching has seamlessly complemented Lafe Conner’s lifelong involvement in Scouting, particularly his experiences at summer camp.  Lafe and his wife Diane have integrated camp life into their family, with a career in education as the means to sustain that connection. Through initiatives like Friday science excursions and biannual expeditions, he aims to provide students with a Scouting-like experience, fostering their connection to nature and community and instilling core values, mirroring the influence of Scouting. Lafe is grateful for the support of Wasatch High School and his family which have shaped his journey as an educator and Scouter.

 

Scott Cornelsen - 2023 Silver Beaver Recipient

Scott moved to Utah to attend college at USU and has called Cache Valley his home for 26 years. With his wife, they are the parents of 6 children aged 7 to 19. Scott's involvement in Scouting spans most of his life, starting at 8 years old.  As an adult volunteer, he has served in a variety of roles. Church service has been a significant aspect of his life as well. Professionally, Scott is an engineer specializing in designing meteorological and scientific measurement equipment. His family bucket list includes visiting every National Park in the country.

 

Jolyn Dickerson - 2023 Influential Women in Scouting Award Recipient

Jolyn is a devoted scout leader with a rich history of involvement in youth ministries and Scouting. Known for her unwavering dedication, she tirelessly strives for the success of both her Scouts and fellow adult leaders. Going above and beyond, she consistently delivers an exceptional program, providing comprehensive training and exemplary leadership. Alongside her husband Dennis, she stands as a pillar in the scouting community, steadfast in her support and guidance of youth development.

 

Sage Doyle - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Sage is currently a Venturing Crew Adviser. His weekly schedule includes at least two scout meetings, three scout calls, and weekend campouts. He's committed to helping youth rise and succeed, devoting his life to their cause. Sage has a remarkable track record of service: he served as a first responder at the 2023 World Jamboree, staffed the 2023 National Jamboree, and acted as the Conference Vice Chief of Conservation at the 2022 NOAC. Beyond scouting, he is an EMT serving the Salt Lake City area.  Sage's selflessness is evident to all who meet him; he consistently puts others before himself.

 

Michael Gordon - 2023 Silver Beaver Award Recipient 

The culminating experience of Michael Gordon’s journey in Scouting was at the age of 17 as an Explorer Scout when he hiked the High Sierra from Giant Forest to Whitney Portal. As an adult in Scouting, Michael started as a troop committee member. He joined the Old Ephraim District Advancement Committee in 2004 and assumed the role of chair for the Eagle subcommittee in 2009, where he interviewed 430 Eagle Scouts. Witnessing these scouts, many now with families of their own, brings him great joy. Currently, Michael is with Sea Scout Ship 716.

 

Patrick Gotti - 2023 Torch of Gold Award Recipient

Pat and his wife Carol have been married for over 35 years, and they are proud parents of two children and four grandchildren. With a distinguished Air Force career spanning 24 years, Pat has dedicated himself to serving youth in New Mexico, Turkey, Guam, and Utah. Throughout his service, he held multiple leadership positions within the Scouting community. Pat has devoted over three decades to working with special-needs Scout units. Currently serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 1481, chartered by VFW Post 1481 in Ogden, he continues to make a significant impact.

 

Don Hall - 2024 NESA Silver Wreath Award Recipient & 2023 Alumni Award Recipient

Don has amassed numerous awards and engaged in countless activities throughout his 30-plus years as an adult Scouter and a decade as a youth participant. However, among these accolades, his fondest memories are assisting his nephew with his Eagle Scout project and serving alongside his daughter on staff at the 2017 Jamboree.  Balancing his responsibilities as a business owner, which frequently take him across the United States and abroad, Don cherishes the moments spent with his family upon returning home. Amidst his travels, he remains committed to working with the Scouts.

 

Roger Heslop - 2024 Woods Service Award Recipient

Roger is the 44th recipient of the prestigious recognition, and no person in the United States is more deserving! Roger has been recognized in Scouting for his years of dedicated service with numerous awards. He is a member of the Council Advancement Committee and chair of the Council Disability Awareness Committee.  He is also a committee member for Troop 1481 sponsored by the VFW. Roger is among the greatest advocates for Scouts with disabilities, convinced that ALL scouts with disabilities can succeed in Scouting. His real accomplishments have been achieved with his wife, Lael, their seven children, 26 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

 

Emily Hill - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Emily currently serves as a Residence Director at Utah State University, where she channels her passion for helping others. With nine years of involvement in Scouting, she has worked at various Scout camps, including two years as the Thunder Ridge Camp Director. Under her direction, the camp was opened again after five years of closure due to a catastrophic forest fire.  Her leadership in Scouting has not only cultivated a strong affinity for the BSA but has also influenced her passions and aspirations. Emily eagerly anticipates a lifetime of service, both within and beyond Scouting.

 

Paxton Jensen - 2023 National Outstanding Eagle Award Recipient

Paxton Jensen, the son of Robert and Kathy Jensen, is a devoted husband to Kara and father of 3. His journey includes achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, serving as a Camp Loll ranger. Currently, he serves on the Executive Board of Crossroads of the West Council. In his professional capacity, Paxton oversees operations at General RV in Utah, with locations in Draper and South Weber, while also being recognized as a recipient of RV PRO's Class of 2021: 40 Under 40. He is committed to empowering youth and lives by the belief that actions speak louder than words.

Michael Keller - 2023 National Outstanding Eagle Award Recipient

Since 1978, Michael Keller has been actively engaged in scouting, with cherished memories of attending Jamborees both as a youth and as an adult leader, along with participating in Order of the Arrow NOACs. Achieving Eagle Scout status in 1968 holds a special place in his heart, as does Camp Maple Dell. Mike has had a distinguished career in education, always being available to help develop youth – always with the support of his wife, Lana. He eagerly anticipates accompanying six grandsons to the 2024 NOAC in Boulder, Colorado.

 

Brandon Kelly - 2023 NESA Silver Wreath Award Recipient

Brandon is an Eagle Scout with 7 Silver Palms. Throughout his dedicated service, he has assisted countless Eagle Scouts across multiple states.  He currently serves on the NESA National Committee.  Brandon is also the CEO of a Hotel and Property Management Company. Brandon's proudest achievement is seeing both of his sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout with Palms, become Vigil Honor members in the OA, and has received 18 Eagle Mentors pins.  The NESA National Committee previously presented his recognition, but we wanted to ensure Brandon was honored locally.

 

Douglas Koci - 2023 Silver Beaver Recipient

Douglas Koci has held various adult volunteer positions in Scouting over the years, including Assistant Scoutmaster, Webelos den leader, committee member, committee chair, Scouting coordinator, Varsity Scout coach, Unit Commissioner, and Assistant District Commissioner. Currently, he serves as the District Commissioner of the Thurston Peak District. In the community, Doug volunteers for VITA and currently contributes to the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program. Along with his wife Lorna, Doug takes pride in his 6 children and 15 grandchildren.

 

Kayleen Kraus - 2023 Influential Women in Scouting Award Recipent

Kayleen dedicates herself to assisting at-risk youth in achieving their GEDs or high school diplomas. With nearly two decades of involvement in scouting, she has served in various capacities at the unit, district, and council levels. Kayleen has earned the esteemed Silver Beaver award and completed Wood Badge training. Currently, she serves as the Camp Director at Camp Fife, instilling in youth a deep appreciation for the outdoors.  She is an excellent camp director. She is married to Philip, and they have four sons and three grandchildren.

 

 

Mati Mayfield - 2023 Distinguished Commissioner Service Award Recipient

Mati takes immense pride in her family's strong legacy within the scouting community. With a grandfather honored as a Silver Beaver and a grandmother as a Silver Fawn, alongside a mother distinguished with both Silver Beaver and Wood Badge recognition, scouting runs deep in her. Mati herself holds the prestigious titles of Silver Beaver and Wood Badge Bear. Living amidst a household affectionately referred to as a "convocation of Eagles," including her husband and two sons, scouting is not just a hobby but a cherished way of life for her.

 

Matthew McIff- 2023 National Outstanding Eagle Award Recipient

Matthew McIff and his wife, Rachel, along with their four children, call Saint George, Utah home, where they actively participate in Scouting and relish outdoor adventures in Southern Utah. Originally from Richfield, Utah, Matt now practices as a Family Physician in St. George. Over the past 13 years, Matt has held various leadership positions within Scouting, currently serving as Committee Chair for 3 troops in St. George. Additionally, he contributes to the Vanguard International Scouting Association as its program Vice President.

 

Johanne Miller - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Johanne joined Venturing at the age of 14. Throughout her life she has enjoyed serving others and tries to make all feel welcome. Johanne’ has used that same attitude of service in Venturing as she befriended new crew members and served them in her leadership positions within the Crew. During her time as a Venturer, she served as the Crew President through Covid, Vice President to the 2019 World Jamboree Crew, and most recently as the Crew President for the 2023 National Jamboree Crew. Johanne loved Venturing, the skills that she has learned, service given, and the friends made.

 

Bob Morris - 2022 iScouting!...Vale La Pena Award Recipient

As a young man in Troop 607, Inglewood, California, Bob Morris achieved the rank of Star Scout. Since then, he has dedicated many years to assisting Scouts in reaching their goals. Amidst chaos, Bob finds serenity working with the youth in Scouting. While holding a variety of Scouting positions, Bob finds serving at the troop level to be the most rewarding. Establishing a Hispanic troop and working with Latino youth in his community has been a significant highlight in Bob's scouting journey. Witnessing these scouts grow and fulfill their potential through the Scouting program has brought him immense satisfaction.

 

Sierra Moser - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Sierra brings five years of dedicated service to Scouting America to her credit. Throughout this time, she has had the privilege of working at five distinct camps within the Council, each experience enriching her understanding of Scouting and outdoor education.  Recently, Sierra proudly graduated from Snow College, earning her Associate of Science degree. This achievement not only signifies her academic prowess but also underscores her commitment to personal and professional development. Sierra is poised to continue making meaningful contributions to Scouting America and its mission.

 

Jody Orme - 2023 Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award Recipient

For 25 years, Jody Orme has dedicated himself to public education, passionately teaching US history and debate. Currently, Jody teaches at Skyview High School in Cache County.  He is a respected educator and the current camp director for Camp Loll.  He is a Vigil Honor member in the Order of the Arrow and a recipient of the prestigious Silver Beaver award. For over three decades Jody has contributed his expertise as a summer camp staff member, enriching the lives of countless young people through his commitment to Scouting.

 

Val Parrish - 2023 Council Alumnus of the Year Award Recipient

Val has served Scouting and its alumni in many capacities. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of District Operations for the Crossroads of the West Council. Val's commitment to service extends beyond scouting; he has also been recognized for his contributions to the Sons of Utah Pioneers, where he currently serves as National President-Elect. Additionally, he is actively involved in church service, serving those in need. Val's professional career at Fidelity Investments spanned 25 years, earning several prestigious awards. Val is a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

 

Bill Phillips - 2023 Silver Beaver Recipient

For William “Bill” Phillips, his most prized possessions are the 16 Eagle Scout Mentor pins that he has been awarded over his years as a scout leader since 1999.  Bill states they are the one thing he will grab on his way out of his house if it ever catches fire.  If asked, Bill would tell you he was never a great Scout. But to all who know Bill, they would not agree.  He is an exceptional person and a phenomenal leader in Scouting.  He has been a rock-solid face of Scouting in the Uintah Basin and has worked hard to ensure youth in the Basin could be a Scout.

 

Emma Price - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Emma has been actively involved in Venturing for the past seven years. During her service as a camp staff member, she has discovered immense joy in the camaraderie and teachings shared by her peers and mentors. Finding a supportive community that resonates with her values and cares for her well-being has been particularly meaningful for Emma.  In addition to her involvement in Venturing, Emma has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. This accomplishment has fueled her mission to give back to Scouting more than it has given her. Emma is dedicated to contributing positively to the Scouting community, inspired by the invaluable experiences.

 

Jeremy Robertson - 2023 George Meany Award Recipient

Jeremy a dedicated firefighter, and member of Salt Lake County Firefighters IAFF Local 1696, is honored to receive the George Meany Award for his service to both the firefighting community and Scouting America. Jeremy is an Eagle Scout and has been involved with scouting since, most recently serving as Scoutmaster for a 2023 National Jamboree troop for the council. His commitment to scouting and his profession reflects the values of leadership, integrity, and service instilled in him during his own scouting experience. In addition to his firefighting role, Jeremy's advocacy for firefighters' rights and safety demonstrates his dedication to collective action and community service, embodying the spirit of the George Meany Award.

 

Neal Robison - 2023 Council Duty to God Recipient

Neal has held numerous leadership roles in scouting at local and national levels. Neal's contributions include involvement in creating the Game Design Merit Badge and overseeing the Novus Project at the World Scout Jamboree in 2019. He also serves on various committees related to religious relationships in scouting and is actively involved in supporting scouting associations worldwide. Professionally, Neal works for Western Governors University. Neal finds joy in his roles as a husband, father, and grandfather.

 

Brian Simmons - 2023 Elbert K. Fretwell Outstanding Educator Award Recipient

Brian has been an integral part of the scouting community, dedicating 13 years to Scout Camp alongside his wife Robin and their 3 children. Alongside this commitment, he works as a Special Education teacher at South Ogden Junior High, a position he has held for 24 years. Throughout his journey, the Scout Oath and Law have served as guiding principles, shaping every accomplishment and lesson in his life professionally and personally.

 

Morris Stewart - 2023 Silver Beaver Recipient

Morris Stewart says that Scouting has always played a significant role in his life. A Scouting veteran of 65 years, Morris has served as a Cub Master, Scout Master (multiple times), COPE Director, Cub Day Camp Director, Varsity Wood Badge Staff, Scout Wood Badge Staff, Mentor to Eagle Scouts, and Trainer in various First Aid programs and Shooting Sports. He finds great joy in assisting young individuals in developing strength and capability as they grow up.

 

Abram Torres - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

After achieving his Eagle Scout rank one week before the Covid-19 shutdown, Abram Torres thought his scouting journey would end. He found a new troop and decided to attend National Youth Leadership Training, where he developed a profound love for scouting through the leadership experiences offered. Abram spent last summer at Camp Loll as a Camp Counselor and Chaplain's Aid.  With a family history deeply rooted in scouting (his Great Grandfather earned the BSA's first 80-year veteran award) Abram's goal is to remain involved long enough to match, and perhaps surpass, his impressive family legacy.

 

Andreas 'Baron' Weseman - 2023 National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award Recipient

Andreas ‘Baron’ Weseman has had a remarkable 49-year tenure with Scouting America, having served across 18 different councils during his scouting career. His extensive travels as a United States Air Force Officer spanning 27 years didn't deter him from carrying his scout uniform wherever duty called. Currently serving as the Vice Wing Commander of the Utah Wing Civil Air Patrol, he dedicates his time to fostering youth leadership and community service. Baron holds the position of associate department head in the Aviation Technology Department at Utah State University, playing a pivotal role in quadrupling the program.

 

Naomi Wilson - 2023 Venturing Leadership Award Recipient

Naomi loves to challenge herself, build friendships, and give back to the community. She is currently attending UVU with plans to graduate in digital marketing. Throughout her schooling, she has been involved in the Venturing program where she completed the Venturing, Discovery and Pathfinder Ranks as she served in leadership positions. As a part of her Crew, she enjoyed making friends, learning leadership skills, and being involved in planning activities that helped her Crew grow. Naomi loves bringing smiles to other's faces. She works hard to be aware of others needs and support them.
